Working in digital, I’m no stranger to working from home every so often so having a desk set up is vital to me. Creating a small office space in a corner of a room can be something really simple to set up. Having this set up available helps me to concentrate and focus on the tasks at hand. Whether it’s blogging or working, this is where I work best.
Get Yourself a Desk
It might seem like an obvious thing to say but having a desk is so important. A place you can work that isn’t used for anything else like eating. I found this one that fitted neatly (once I’d removed part of a skirting board!) on the left of the chimney. It has three little drawers which fit my notebooks and stationery perfectly.
Set-up Somewhere with Natural Light
One of the things I love is that I get a lot of natural light in my dining room. There’s nothing worse than sitting at a desk all day looking at bright screen with an artificial light above you. Create your small office space somewhere that will let those sun rays in and brighten up your morning.
I really didn’t want an ugly black plastic stand to put my laptop on so I decided to go for a decorative box. I’ve had it years and it just has a few memories and keepsakes in it. If you’re using computers all day, try and put the top of the screen at eye level so as not to strain your neck.
Mouse and Keyboard
Again, more for comfort but you don’t want to be using the trackpad on your laptop if you have it raised. Get yourself a keyboard and mouse and save those wrists. You won’t realise how much more convenient having separate peripherals is.
Surround Yourself with Motivation
I really want to get some girl boss motivational quotes for the wall but they are having to wait for now. Surrounding yourself with things that will motivate you and get your creative juices flowing is such an empowering thing. Two things that I’ve loved to use recently is my The Inspired Stories planner and my 90 Day Manifestation Journal. I’ll be doing some separate posts for these but they have really helped me to concentrate on what I want and where I want to be.
Add a Desk Plant
There are lots of reasons to have a desk plant. For me personally, plants make me happy. Having a bit of the outside, natural world helps to give me that little boost. Creating a small office space with some shrubbery will also help to improve your air quality.
A Comfy Desk Chair
At the time, I didn’t think I would be using my desk every single day for the foreseeable future. The world partially shutting down because of coronavirus wasn’t something that I expected one bit. I bought a super cheap chair from Ikea and I am now full of regret. My back has started aching after only a week so a decent and supportive chair is on the top of my ‘to buy’ list.
Creating a small office space in a room that already has a function is incredibly simple. It helps me to concentrate and focus and keep to the goals that I set each morning. Add in some little personal features that make your desk yours. Something little but I love my coasters as they’re themed on Gilmore Girls. The Dragonfly Inn is the hotel that Lorelai runs. Grab yourself a coffee, sit down at your new space and get power through your tasks!
